Lapis is the Latin for stone, and lazuli comes from “lazvard”, a Persian town where the stone was principally mined, so the name literally means “stone of Lazvard”.
The Romans believed that lapis was a powerful aphrodisiac. Lapis lazuli is regarded by many people around the world as the stone of friendship and truth. The blue stone is said to encourage harmony in relationships.
